If you are mapping out time off down under, Australia public holidays 2027 give New South Wales a generous run of long weekends — and knowing which ones move when they hit a weekend is the key to planning them.

This guide lists every NSW public holiday for 2027, explains how weekend holidays are shifted, and shows the long weekends worth booking travel around.

See the table below for the next holiday.

All NSW public holidays in 2027

Australia has no single national holiday calendar — each state and territory sets its own. This page uses New South Wales (Sydney) dates, which cover the national holidays plus NSW's own days.

If you are in Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria or elsewhere, treat the national holidays — New Year, Australia Day, Easter, Anzac Day, Christmas and Boxing Day — as fixed, but check King's Birthday and Labour Day locally, as they move by weeks between states.

What each public holiday marks

New Year's Day and Australia Day, on 26 January, open the year in the middle of the southern summer. The Easter cluster — Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday — gives NSW a rare four-day run of consecutive holidays.

Anzac Day on 25 April commemorates Australian and New Zealand service men and women, and is one of the most significant days in the national calendar. The King's Birthday in June and Labour Day in October round out the mid-year and spring long weekends, before Christmas Day and Boxing Day close the year.

How weekend holidays are moved

When New Year's Day, Australia Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday in NSW, an additional public holiday is added on the following Monday, and sometimes Tuesday, so the day off is not lost.

Anzac Day works differently. It is always marked on 25 April, even on a weekend, because of its commemorative meaning — but NSW adds a separate substitute public holiday so workers still get a day off.

As anywhere, book around the observed day off, not just the calendar date, when a holiday lands on a weekend.

Long weekends in 2027

Several NSW public holidays fall on a Monday, creating ready-made three-day weekends. With one or two days of leave you can extend the best of them into a proper break.

Easter is the standout: Good Friday through Easter Monday gives four consecutive days off, and it often sits close to the Anzac Day holiday in late April — book a few days between them and you can chain together an unusually long autumn break.

The January holidays — New Year's Day and Australia Day — fall in peak summer, so coastal escapes, the Blue Mountains and interstate flights are busiest and priciest then. The King's Birthday long weekend in June is a popular window for a cooler-season trip.

How the states and territories differ

The national holidays are shared, but several dates are set state by state. The King's Birthday, for example, is a June Monday in New South Wales and Victoria, but Queensland observes it in October and Western Australia around late September or October.

Labour Day moves even more: it is October in NSW, March in Victoria and Western Australia, and May in Queensland. Some states also keep local days you will not find in NSW, such as Victoria's Melbourne Cup day and various regional show days. If your trip crosses a state border, check that state's official calendar before you count on a day off.

School holidays and planning

NSW school holidays cluster around early and mid year, with the long summer break spanning late December into late January. Those weeks overlap the New Year and Australia Day holidays, which is exactly why flights and coastal accommodation peak then.

For cheaper travel, the shoulder days just after a long weekend tend to beat the holiday itself, and booking well ahead for Easter and the summer break reliably beats last-minute fares.

What's open and what's closed

Government offices, banks and most workplaces close on public holidays. Many businesses that do open pay staff penalty rates, which is why some cafes and smaller shops choose to close for the day.

Retail trading is restricted on the most significant days. Good Friday, Christmas Day and the morning of Anzac Day have the tightest limits, while other public holidays usually see shops open on reduced hours. Supermarkets and transport run holiday timetables, so check before heading out.

Public transport in Sydney and across NSW typically runs a Sunday or special timetable on public holidays, and popular routes to the coast and mountains get busy over the long weekends.

How we keep this page accurate

Dates follow the official NSW Government public holiday schedule, cross-checked against an independent open-source holiday library. Every date comes from a single data file and weekdays are calculated automatically, so the tables stay correct as the year rolls over.
